The 30s

The Financial Foundation That Everything Else Depends On

Welcome to Cornerstone — Temple Alliance’s 10-week financial education series. Each edition is written for a specific life stage or financial situation, designed to be read once and returned to often. We start where the stakes are highest and the window is widest: your 30s.

Your 30s are the decade where financial decisions start to compound — in both directions. The habits you build now, and the mistakes you avoid, have more impact on your ultimate financial position than almost anything you’ll do in your 40s or 50s. The good news is that time is still powerfully on your side. The bad news is that it won’t be for much longer.

Work through this checklist honestly. If you’re ticking most of these off, you’re ahead of the majority of South Africans your age. If several of them sting a little — that’s the point.

The one question to sit with

If your income stopped tomorrow, how long could your household sustain its current lifestyle without borrowing? If the answer is less than three months, that is where your financial attention belongs right now — before investment strategy, before offshore exposure, before anything else.

The Psychology of Money

Morgan Housel

The most widely recommended personal finance book of the past decade. It doesn’t tell you which stocks to buy. It makes the case, quietly and convincingly, that financial success has less to do with what you know and more to do with how you behave when things get uncomfortable.
